Experience of VITZ in Lahore

Having the concept of luxury car, with great many safety features, advance engine technology, superb petrol mileage, and all in 1000 cc, VITZ is a natural favourite choice. Fortunately, re-sale limiting factor is also not much in her case.

In this blog, I'll be describing my experience of keeping Toyota VITZ in Lahore, since 2006. The purpose is to share my experience, specific to repairs, so that others can benefit from it.

Key to trouble free Vitz: Always use new genuine Toyota parts or new imported Japenese parts, and get the repairs from ONLY TOYOTA RAVI MOTORS, Lahore. NEVER go for SECOND HAND PARTS. Car is made of parts, and each part has some life. New parts ensure maximum longer life.

* Note: You do not have to buy expensive parts from 3S dealers, when you can get the same Toyota genuine part at half price from 2S dealers.

I bought her from a local show room. Her mileage was some 35000 km. So, the car was not zero meter.

The Tuning Episode - lost 18 km per liter mileage :(

After 2 weeks of driving vitz, and the fact that I previously had kept local Suzukis, I went to Toyota Walton Motors, asking them for tuning :p They looted me on this, because the car comes with auto-adjusting VVTi engine with Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Had to fight them hard, corruption is in our veins. A worker there, lied to me saying that its air inflow sensor is out of order. He tipped the parts shop to tell me a higher price. Then he offered me an economic solution i.e. he already has one, which he can give me for cheaper price. Now, me being a bit low on money, and stupid; took his advice. He had to show some sort of repair in company's book, since I came asking for tuning, so he did that. He altered my car's ECU settings, which messed up my car's kool mileage of 18 km per liter, to just barely 12 :'( My car only went 430 km in one tank after this. So, went back in there :@, charged with anger, adopted a few tactics and I asked them one simple thing i.e. put my car's ECU back in shape. They did corrected the settings in my car's ECU, but the car now goes max 17 km in one liter. Often, she now goes 16 km. I miss her 18 km per liter mileage :'(

So, there is no carborator to tune in this car, keep that in mind :) Only changing spark plugs, mobil oil and filters is the tuning for this car.

Raising my VITZ without altering suspension O_o

Car has low road clearance, and she often hits speed breakers. Raising it was a must, so is to avoid altering the company designed suspension. The simple solution is to use 14" wheel rims and "high" profile tyres. This gave the car an equal raise from all sides, and center of gravity remains stable. Though, I am not 100% sure about this being absolutely safe from car rolling over on sharp turns with sudden brakes, but it is definitely safer than adding packing or messing with suspension, and surely ending up-side down :/

List of Repairs - revougnaizing my VITZ :)

After a month, I realized that the car came with a few problems; as I bought her second hand :/

1- AC Compressor leaked: Purhcased new Toyota Corolla 1.3's compressor. Awsome cooling, but bad milage. So awsome, that I have not serviced my AC since then :p (4+ years now).

2- Week Clutch Plate: Purchased new Genuine Clutch Plate from 2S dealer in the market. After purchasing new clutch plate, I went to my favourite Toyota 3S Repair shop, Toyota Ravi Motors.

3- Suspension work: At some 80,000 km, I replaced both front and back shock absorbers. Again, bought new shocks from market 2S dealer, and had them replaced from favourite 3S Toyota Ravi Motors :) I missed to buy some smaller items, and had to buy them on double price from the 3S dealer (where my car was getting repaired). The total end cost of this repair was some 24k.

4- Car sinks on accelaration / engine missing / vibration: This turned out to be engine head issue. When finally, after 100,000 km, engine started viberation / missing, it was clear indication that head needs overhauling. Here, I did a small mess in the repair. With all new engine head related parts, such as valves, seals, guides, timing tnesioner ... etc, I went to a local mechanic, and not Toyota Ravi :O The local mechanic recommended, and I followed his recommendation O_o to use local valves, and asked me to return valves and other related new parts, which I did :@ Any ways, after 2 weeks, engine head broke down again :'( Then I fought with my all time old mechanic since Khyber times, and went to Toyota Ravi again. I guess, spending so much money made me follow these stupid descisions. Hell if that saved me money, it costed me double :(

5- Wheel bearings: Close to 150,000 km, had to purchase new Genuine Toyota bearing for front tyres, from market (2S dealers).

Since then, the car is running like a charm :)

CNG Conversion:

Some 2 to 3 months after purchasing, we decided to convert her to CNG. We adopted local cheap "venturi" based fixed CNG kit. On this topic, I want to bring in to readers notice that there are better CNG kits, designed for ECU and EFI based engines. One such example (and I guess the only one in Pakistan) is Lendi Renzo OMEGAS CNG kit, it uses EFU and copies petrol programming from existing ECU to its hybrid ECU, and used hybrid EFI (special injectors) to inject both CNG and Petrol, directly into engine; thereby, giving best performance and mileage for both kind of fuels.

http://www.landi.it/layout.jsp?idz=10067&idtp=165&lang=3&idprodotto=15

I have above kit on my wish list, but 1.25 years back, it used to cost around 50k. So, when I'll have surplus 50k, I'll definitely would want to go for it.

Hope my blog would of some benefit to the readers :)

CONCLUSION:

Toyota VITZ is the best car, and a natural choice; only problem is that it is not available ZERO meter, with any sort of warranty and after sale services :( So, buying it second hand from showrooms, or getting it imported; the car will be SECOND HAND. The more vigilant one is with repairs, the more smoother and comfort ride she becomes. If one is too busy and wants peace of mind, and zero repairs for at least 5 years, I recommend buy any new local car, as they come with some warranty and after sale services.
In the end, it is worth mentioning, that there is no end to one's own interest, and this car is superb and very popular indeed.

  1. Thanks for adding such informations, recently, i have bought vitz 2005. unfortunately, the car engine need overhauling. could you kind enough if you let me know where can by its parts, i live in small town and the engine parts are not available here.
secondly, if i convert it on cng ,is it possible,a local cng installer asked me don;t for that. what did you say.

  2. Hi Afzaal,
I bought parts from Montgomry Road in Lahore. I tried Usman traders/parts ... forgot exact name, but starts with Usman, if you approach it from shell petrol pumup side, then the shop is on the right, after say a 150 meters or so.

For Overhauling, you might be referring to "Head overhauling". In which they change valves, and you would have to buy guides and seals. Buy all such repair related parts new.

I heard CNG conversion arguments on 2005 before as well. If it can not be done by conventional ventury style CNG kits (normal widely available), it can definitely be done using OMEGAS CNG kit. This Kit uses Fuel Injectors, to inject CNG and not through air inflow. But this kit is expensive. You might also want evaluate if you want CNG keeping current CNG situation and kit prices in mind.

    1. The squeak sound is not harmful normally, it comes from the part on which the fan belt pulleys revolve. Actually, it is inner part of the fan pulley. I had it changed when engine was being overhauled. It requires dismantling many parts before the pulley can be taken out.

  5. Dear Moiz, thanks for sharing your experience. i am sick of this knocking issue of my vitz 2005. i have taken it to many mechanics including toyota but it seems like an eternal issue with vitz. it starts knocking when accelerator is on lower end. it starts from 40km/h and goes beyond 100km/h. please suggest a solution if you have come across something like this. meter shows it has just crossed 76000 km, but who knows? people say they reverse the meter when import it. its the 1000cc new shap.

    thanks,

  6. Dear Aziz,
There is no known factory defect in Vitz so far, so for sure whatever your are facing can be fixed. The best way (expensive though), start changing defective parts with new long life parts. In my experience, Toyota Ravi Motors near Thokar in Lahore provide the best technical thorough checkup of any defect reported, and they do fix it very well. To buy new parts at affordable prices, visit Montgomry Road. Car is made of parts, replace the defective part, and you have a new car again. From your statements, I think yours is automatic transmission. Mine if manual transmission. For me, new clutch plate costed me Rs. 8000 back in 2008/9. Not too sure how many parts would be involved in your case. Please visit Toyota Ravi Motors for thorough checkup.

  8. Dear Mohsin,
Two tips: ECU Programming, called IT checkup in layman terms. Second, larger tires also effect mileage, but not that much.
In my case, Toyota Walton motors screwed the ECU Programming, trying to impress me by giving my vitz racing style acceleration. It dropped mileage from 18 km to 14 in my case! When I showed anger at them, they fixed it back, but I get max 16 (without AC). So, yes, ECU programming can improve or degrade fuel consumption. Please visit Toyota Ravi Motors, they are honest in their work, and are fully technical. Ask them to do IT checkup of the car. Hope this helps.

  9. Changing Fuel Injectors is also on my list. Servicing them also possibly might help, but I would first start from IT check-up.

    ReplyDelete
  10. There are comprehensive diagnostic reports, the person doing the IT checkup can best advise you if something is wrong with fuel injector or not. Normally, running diagnostics is easier than changing something in the ECU programming. So, it is also possible that they refrain from doing any IT changes in the ECU programming, but if they are comfortable with it, and find that there is a need to do any IT change, then you should argue for it.

  11. Thank you moiz for being helpful really appreciate that. I will then go for comprehensive check because i hav'nt changed tyres using geniun tyres that comes with the car.

  14. Helpful blog :)
I bought a 2004 vitz a year back and it was in a pretty good condition.About 2 Months ago i took my car on highway for 2 or 3 times it gave me excellent performance and mileage but performance in city was not as good as highways (not a problem). A month ago it started missing on highway (82000 mileage done) at 70+kmph. I changed engine oil+oil filter+air filter. But it didn't worked for me and the issue get worst. My car started giving check engine sign with AC at 40+ and without AC at 80+ and the petrol average get worst than ever. Having no experience in such problems i inquired my friends and they suggested me to check it from magic motors model town (Lahore ) as they are having electronic equipments.
I went there today. They diagnosed my car with reader and found no problem. They inquired me about tuning and i said that i don't have tuned for 1 year( as i bought one year back :p).They tuned my car with there changings :-
    Tuning :- 2000 rs
    Map sensor:- 1500rs
    Spark Plugs :- 750rs (4 pieces)
Fuel Injector:- 2000 rs (one piece as they showed me on the machine that it was not geniune)
    Fuel Filter:- 1300 rs
    total :- 8170 rs (My bad i haven't read your blog earlier :( )
After that car is not giving sign and is looking in a good coondition. Haven't checked fuel economy yet as i have repaired it today.
Now my question is that you think above mentioned rates are ok and these things needed to be done ?
Secondly they are asking me to change brake cylinders . What would you suggest about it ?

    1. Hi Yalmaz, my understanding is that if check engine light pops up, an error log entry is created in car's computer. My favourite Toyota Ravi Motors would be able to connect "IT" (that's what they call it) a device to your car's computer and read error logs to tell you something. The things/changes done to your car by Model Town guys might well have fixed the issue. But its better to check, so, ask for "IT" checkup of your car from Toyota Ravi Motors

    2. If your brakes are fine, do not touch the brake cylinder. If brakes are not fine, only then ask for checkup. In general, brake cylinder is needed to be changed if you are losing brake pressure ... when you hit the paddel, the brake cylinder would apply hydrolic pressure/force to stop your car (via brake shoes/brake pads).

    1. Dear David, please choose Toyota Motors if possible. The knowledge of ECU controlled cars is not well spread. Please note, normally, in such cars, there is no carborator to tune, tuning for them is simply replacing few parts like spark plugs, air filter, in worst cases and very last resort, Fuel Injectors (EFI) could be inspected. However, what could help the most, after replacing spark plugs and air oil filters, may be also sparkplus wires, would be an IT checkup of ECU. In layman terms, it is simply called IT checkup. They connect to ECU via a small console, and can read diagnostic reports of the car, and additionally, try to select pre-programmed options, such as an option from most fuel saving, to most speed and power, or perhaps something in between. More advanced technician would be able to program your ECU, however, such advanced technicians are rare. Therefore, simply go for company pre-configured option in the ECU (more like a factory reset should be possible).

    2. BTW, how much CC does your car have? 1300 cc or 1600 cc? or 1000 cc? I think I would not expect any more than 12 or 13 from a 1300 cc vitz (max). and therefore, for 1300, 10 might be fine already. If you have bigger and wider wheels, this already means -2 from whatever average you expect.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi, cleaning is not a problem, you can get it done whenever you like, however, my personal opinion is that throttle body should be fine without cleaning at-least 3 months, so, I see it is not necessary to do it each month, so, you can skip one month for sure. Also, it is a lot of hassel, they would dismantle a lot (in my opinion) parts than what you would expect in normal servicing. Therefore, I do not like to get it cleaned every month.

  21. what is Fuel Tank of Vitz 1000 CC, 2011 Model? plz

    ReplyDelete
  22. I have recently purchased Vitz-2011 new shape, after that Full the fuel tank.It shows 9.5 KM/L and over all 585 KM of tank capacity that can be run.
This 9.5 KM/L increased slowly up to 11.2KM/L after 300 KM used. I was vvvv upset and checked the vehicle from enercon wks center G-10 (near Islamabad H.Court) he has checked and said its 100% OK, but not satisfied and after used of 140KM petrol used about 12 liter so consumption come 11.66 KM/l.
again i go to another wks near Daewoo Naseerabad, Ali automobile, he checked with carman scanner. and told that all sensors are OK, no fault. but the problem was SAME.
after that i have friend that has same car, he told me about RE-Set of computer (ECU) that is done by as.
    1) Remove the Negative terminal of Battery for 5-minute.
    2) again Tight the -ve terminal.
    3) switch ON the car.
    4) The ECU reset and for 20 second the engine was unstable, but after that become STABLE.
    5) Drive the car for 30-minute on normal road as well as Motorway, for observing pakistani road conditions as well as Pak peterol vs engine conditions.
    6) The dasboard computer that does not go beyond 11.2, goes up to 19KM/L and that is confirmed.
    7) Now the car is so light and changing Gear (AT) quickly.
Now it shows 702 KM instead of 345KM, and duly verified.
I am so happy and telling it to all friends the reality.....that is safe .
Dont open/clean the Throttle Body..................untill the scanner shows 0-fault.
    Be aware of it.

    Regards.

    1. Hey, I am very happy to read your reply. When I was reading the first part of your reply, I was thinking that ok, the car must have auto adjusting / adapting mechanism, and then later part of your reply concluded it. I will also try re-setting the ECU out, infact, I had thought about it, but never knew that I could do it myself, without going to a Toyota Repair shop. These days, my car is also giving very less average of something between 10 and 12. However, this, I had been suspecting, that perhaps any of my family member had its RPM changed to get kool air out of air conditioner. I will also try re-setting the ECU, many thanks man.

  25. Increased Horsepower

Cars that have their catalytic converters removed experience an increase in engine horsepower. Catalytic converters create a significant source of engine back-pressure due to the constrictive effects they have on exiting engine exhaust gases. Removal of catalytic converters from cars allows exhaust gases to exit their engines much faster and at higher levels.

    Better Gas Mileage
Since catalytic converter removal allows for exhaust gases to exit a car's engine at increased speeds, engine back-pressure is reduced, which lessens engine strain. This reduction in engine back-pressure and engine strain enables an engine to work more easily, and thus reduces fuel consumption and increases gas mileage.

    1. Break paddle become dead due to break cylinder Rubber washer worn out. rubber washer does not sustain break pressure. First change the Break washer and if cylinder is worn out, U also must change the cylinder.
02nd case check the wheel cylinder Break washer, if it is leak then change the wheel cylinder Break washer.
This is because of Break fluid contamination that must replace after 50 ~ 60 thousand KM. and we do not change it ultimately we face 3000 to 4000 Rs loss.

  28. My vitz 2006 model (1.0L 3-cylinder engine 83K Kms done) is generating 'Tik' 'Tik' noise for the past two weeks from the engine bay when accelerator is pressed. This sound is noticeable at lower speed but goes away at higher speed.I got it checked from a local mechanic and according to him its coming from engine tappets and could be cam or bush or some other engine issue as well , which can be diagnosed only once engine is opened.
Then I took my car to Toyota 3s and their preliminary diagnosis was that it's tappets sound from the engine due to faulty VVT controller that's not letting the oil to flow freely at low speed, however as the car speed increases, flow gets bit normal and thus no audible tappet sound. According to Toyota 3S ,this can only be confirmed once they open the tappets cover and do the detailed analysis. If required VVT controller will be replaced and tappets adjustment will be done.

Both Toyota 3s and local mechanic suggested me to use 20W50 oil instead of 5W30 (Toyota recommended) and noise may go away .So I replaced the oil and tapped noise did go away 90% for 2- 3 days but has re-appeared

    Questions.
1). Is Toyota's preliminary diagnosis correct... Any experience?
2). Is it safe/recommended to open the tappets cover and do detailed analysis let's say by removing something from engine. Can it cause some major screw-up? or should I let it alone as is?
3). Is it safe to get VVT controller replaced without any subsequent impact on the engine.Any risks?. Is it a common procedure?

    1. Hi. Though I do not have exact answer, I can only say that car would require head repair or overhauling aroud this mileage 80k to 100k. Normal cases are engine vibration, engine missing, or engine sinking instead of picking up speed. did any one of them said that it could be dangerous or harmful to have this sound? what does IT checkup has to report. If a sensor is faulty, diagnostics would report that. Engine check light normally comes up if something is wrong with engine (car has a computer in it, see what it says in its diagnostic reports). Only thing is that opening engine normally turn expensive.

  33. I have a Vitz 2005 / 1000cc / 2006 shape. My car vibrates foolishly when A/C is on but car is stopped and in a gear (D or R). Sometimes it vibrates without A/C turned on, but in a gear and brake paddle is pressed. But it is giving good mileage and have no problem while running (neither with A/C nor without A/C). Check engine light (MIL) turns on so often.

I have replaced Throttle Body, Spark Plugs (bought from Toyota Ravi), regularly change Engine Oil, Air Filter and Oil Filter. Battery is in excellent condition, on scanner there's no issue is shown. I change Oil and Filters every 2000 KM (using Havoline Formula 10w30). I have also changed the Gear Oil recently (change every 25k or 30k KMs). Also changed engine mountings.

But still vibration isn't going away. Some experienced mechanics have told me that every Vitz vibrates and it's normal. But I don't believe, since I haven't such bad vibration in other cars of the same model and make. I believe there's a way which isn't been addressed or noticed by mechanics.

Even Toyota Ravi, Toyota Township and a few good mechanics (I know since 8 to 9 years), were not able to handle this issue. I am sure, there's something missing and needs to pay some attention.

Anyone had such an experience and resolved this issue, please help and advise. Thanks a lot in advance.

  35. Hi. So finding new AC is a problem. I once thought about importing but as I wa away, my family decided to try used AC from some AC shop. Later we did not had the best experience. I know it is expensive to import an AC, but basically its all about right parts. The other option is to use local corolla 1.3 liter's AC. You'll jave super cool chill air but it would mean extra fuel. Reason is simple. It would be a bigger compressor and not the exact that was made for this car. The other downside, you'll end up placing extra stress on the engine. But is an option. Thought to let you know.

  40. my Toyota vitz 2010 that has been in my use for 2.5 years and have more than 1 lac KM on it starting giving some sound and the mechanic upon inspection revealed that the issue is with ac compressor, first he suggested that its pully needed to be changed, but after removing the compressor, told me that sound was coming from inside and whole compressor needs to be changed. Now he was suggesting to buy compressor of 2006 or earlier models and install it in this car (2010 model). Is that ok?
and how about the suggestion of getting the part from bilal gunj?

    1. Sorry Rahman that I am replying so late. Hope all went well with that issue on your end. Its Toyota, and looks like parts are compatible. Not sure if I have written it in my story above, but yes, in my case, I actually did installed compressor of locally manufactured Toyota Corolla. The magnificent cooling did came at the cost of higher fuel consumption, becase Toyota Corollas are 1300 cc, whereas my Vitz was 1000 cc. So, imagine 1000 cc car running a bigger compressor, would mean exra burden and fuel. At some point, may be its also worth saying that in Pakistan, a person who buys a car, is a person who is able to afford many of other expenses. Meaning, it is implied, and given, that car owners are seen as guys with extra cash. Hope you did not went to Bilal Gunj. If people have good experiences there, then fine, however, to my knowledge, it is a market where old used parts from Japan are dumped. Perhaps these parts are only 1 year old, but my way of maintaining a car would always be buying new parts, be they be expensive or require a special import order. However, thats how only I am. I understand that many people look at their budget first, however, keep in mind as said about preception of car owners :)

    1. Hi Kash, comparing a used imported car with a brand new locally manufactured car is a bit unfair, locally manufactured brand new car would come with waranntess and after sales services, even though if they may be of not any good, but argument remains. Other than this comment, I do not have any thing further to say. Hope this helps.

    2. Thanks for reply. Actually I wanna ask that sometimes rpm drops a bit and stable itself.especially when a.c is on. What should I do?.change plugs and throttle body cleaned will be the solution? And for this which plugs will be best and mechanic?

    3. if the car stabelizes its rpm after a drop because of air conditioner, then this is absolutely fine and normal behavior.

  47. I have serviced throttle and plugs. Also changed gear oil. But as a result rpm a little bit stable not perfect.surprisingly mileage of fuel drops . Pick becomes better. What should I do further for mileage and rpm?

  58. need expert/experience help here
got 2009 model vitz in July 2016. it was registered 2013. So 3 years locally run. Odometer reading was 7ok at time of purchase, since i bought this car, i feel sluggish performance, no acceleration.

Someone advise me to change gear oil, i changed gearoil, oil and air filters, but still no change in performance.

Is this CAT issue or something elese, i noted, quite a few people complaining about it ( understand its 1.0 ltr engine) i drove other similar vitz but performance far better.

    Do you have any idea?

  66. Mr Moiz. Thank you so much for your valuable advice. I have two problems
    (1) my fuel meter is not working. after full tank of fuel its crossing one line then stop. what can i do?
    (2) my fuel mileage is very low which i checked is 6-7 km/litre. My model is vitz 2010 of 1000cc. can you please advice me?

    ReplyDelete
  67. I have a Vitz 2007 / 1000cc / 2006 shape. My car trembles foolishly when A/C is on but car is stopped and in a gear (D or R). Sometimes it shakes without A/C turned on, but in a gear and brake paddle is pressed. But it is generous good mileage and have no problematic while running (neither with A/C nor without A/C).

But I don't trust, since I haven't such bad vibration in other cars of the same model and make. I believe there's a way which isn't been addressed or noticed by mechanics.
